Literature Text

Kim broke the surface of the water and took her mask off. She followed the tether back to the boat and climbed in.

“You look like you seen a ghost.” Angus said seeing her pale white face.

Kim managed to choke out between gasps “Mermaids......volleyball.....bubble.....almost saw me....” Then Kim fainted.

Next thing she knew she could feel Angus gently slapping her cheeks. “Lass are you ok?” he asked as she came to.

“Ya I’m fine.” she said as she rose into a sitting position. “I knew I wasn’t seeing things. There are mermaids down there. A redhead with a pink blue and a brunette with a green tail. They were playing volleyball with a large bubble.”

I think you’ve been in the water to long. Lets get you back to dry land.” Angus turned the boat around and headed back home.

The next day Kim was sitting in class telling her stories about what she saw on her dives. “Mermaids playing volleyball? Was the Loch Ness monster there playing lacrosse too?” A young man with a military style crew cut said followed by a chorus of wild laughter.

“I know what I saw because I saw it twice. There are mermaids out there.”

“Ya there playing soccer with the pixies out on the Quad.”

“Settle down.” the professor said as he walked in to begin the class.

Rumor seemed to have spread fast about Kim’s mermaid sighting. While she was on the school’s campus everyone would point and laugh at her. Even everyone at the coffeehouse had heard and thought she was nuts. After taking it for 3 days Kim finally decided that what she needed was proof.

Kim knocked on the door to the dorm room of her friend Mark. Mark was majoring in photography, so if he didn’t have access to water proof camera he would at least know who does.

A short man with dirty brown hairy and thick glasses answered the door. He took one look at Kim and said “I knew I’d be seeing you soon.”

“Then you know why I’m here.” Kim said as she shoved him aside and walked in.

“Your wanting to take a video camera down and get proof of the alleged mermaids.”

They’re not alleged I’ve seen em with my own eyes twice now  And once I get hold of a waterproof camera you will see them too ” she shouted.

“Calm down.” Mark said. “I’m not saying you didn’t see anything.”

“Then what exactly are you saying?” Kim snapped.

“I believe you believe you saw 2 mermaids.”

“I can’t believe this. My own best friend thinks I’m nuts. I’m not getting a camera then am I?”

“Sorry, but no one is gonna trust you with a several thousand dollar camera to go on a wild goose chase.”

“Fine  I’ll go find my own damn camera. Some friend you are.” Kim turned around to storm out.

Mark was heartbroken. Kim had been his best friend since Kindergarten. He hated to have her so upset with him. “Kim wait. If I can get you a camera will you be able to the footage you need?”

Kim nodded. Her face broke into the first smile she had in days. She walked over and gave Mark a big hug. “Thanks man. How can I repay you for this?”

Mark hugged his friend and said. “I can’t promise I’ll be able to get it. If you can prove everyone wrong that will be payment enough. I hate to have you mad at me.”

“When can I have the camera?”

“It might be a few days. I doubt they’d let me sign it out since its common knowledge that I’m friends with you. I’ll call you if I can get it though.”

“Ok. Good luck.” Kim turned to leave. “Oh and one more thing. Sorry for yelling at you.”

Sick and tired of everyone calling her crazy, Kim plans another dive This time she is gonna get proof. Assuming she can get a camera that is.
